Hingham to Launch Inaugural Local Government Academy for Town Residents

Hingham is launching its first annual Local Government Academy for Town residents who are interested in a hands-on learning experience about their government and its operations.

This new program that the Town plans to offer annually, will walk 20 residents over an eight-week period beginning on October 1st through all aspects of the Town’s operations, including administration, public safety, culture and recreation, permitting, public works, education and governance. Selection for the Academy is by application and is open to Town residents 18 years of age and up who are willing to commit to the full eight-week course.

Academy sessions will be led by Town department heads and staff, held on Tuesdays from October 1st through November 19th (except for Election Day, November 5th -- that class will be held on Thursday, November 7th) from 6pm – 8:30pm. The location of each session will vary depending on the topic for that week.  There is no cost to apply and enroll, and forms must be submitted by Tuesday, September 17th. Class size will be limited to 20 residents.

“The enthusiasm and tremendous success we’ve had with the Citizen's Police Academy over the years made us look for more opportunities to offer Hingham residents the chance to learn more about their town government and interact with the people in it. The Local Government Academy is a natural next step,” said Town Administrator Tom Mayo.
